Desk Mount Microphone Stand Buying Guide

Most microphone stands out there have their own particular pros and cons. However, when buying a desk mount microphone stand, it is imperative that you look at a few specific features before you make the purchase.

  • Type of Arm

Generally, desk-mount microphone stands come in two types of arms – a telescopic arm that can be folded against one hinge or a boom arm that can be folded in any direction. This is very important to consider because the type of arm would depend on how you can use it. Therefore, you must choose the microphone stand with the specific arms that supports your purpose.

  • Flexibility

The flexibility of the arms is very important because it might impact the comfort of usage. Some desk mount microphone stands can be folded 360-degrees, especially the ones with boom arms.

However, the stands that have multiple arms are generally not flexible enough to be moved around much because of its structure. Therefore, you must make a trade-off between getting a more flexible stand versus getting one with multiple features.

  • Height

The height of a desk mount microphone stand can vary significantly. Stands with small height are easily portable while the ones with larger height can be helpful in terms of working while standing up. Most microphones have a lot of adjustable height between which you can switch. However, some of them are very small in general and just meant to be used while you are seated at a desk.

  • Material

The material of the structure matters the most when you  are either thinking of how sturdy your microphone stand will be or when you are considering whether it will be portable or not.

In general, most microphone stands are made of aluminum or steel which makes them quite heavy and unfit to be carried around. However, some of them are made of plastic and they are very lightweight which makes them ideal for carriage.

  • Clamp Functionality

As desk-mount microphone stands are meant to be secured to desks, it is generally the case that all such stands have an option to be clamped to a surface. However, it is important to make sure the width of the surface to which the stand can be clamped before you purchase.

Also, in some case, small and simple microphone stands just have a weighted base as a support and do not have the clamp option.

  • Weight

The weight of the desk-mount microphone stand depends mainly on the material of the product. The heavier a product, the more likely it is that it will not topple over if you fit a heavy microphone into the stand.

However, sometimes more than the weight, it is more important to consider the center of gravity for the product to make sure the microphone secured to it does not topple over. If a product is lightweight, it becomes easier to carry it so that is also an important consideration for the weight.

  • Base Material

Often, the material of the base will be different than the material throughout the structure of the microphone.

For example, some models will have a silicone base which will help the stand to stick to the table that it is clamped with and absorb any shock or vibrations so that there will be no disruptions to the microphone. This can be very helpful if you are doing any live recording and do not want any disturbance.

  • Multi-function Features

In many of the models of desk-mount microphone stands you will find options to clamp multiple devices. For instance, you can also connect a laptop, phone, tablet, or DSLR camera to the stand so that you can create an entire recording gear or station out of the stand.

This can be very important if you are recording a video at specific angles and this will give you much more flexibility. Also, some models have a light attached to the stand so that you can use it to enhance your video recording sessions.

  • Adapters

3/8-inches and 5/8-inches adapters are essential to connect microphones to the stands. Not all microphone models are always compatible with the microphone stands so availability of such adapters can often help you connect the microphones to the stand.

Final Thoughts

In your recording sessions, a desk-mount microphone stand can make a huge difference in the quality of the end-result and the comfort of the experience. The microphone stands reviewed in this article will provide you with spectacular results in your recording experience. Nonetheless, our favorite pick from the lot is the ZealSound Microphone Stand because of its high-quality material, flexible arm, and reasonable price.

Portable PA Systems with Wireless Microphones Buying Guide

When you are choosing the best portable PA system with wireless microphones for your specific purpose, it is essential that you look out for some specific features in order to make sure you are getting the best bang for your buck.

  • Dimensions

The dimensions of a PA system are often the main determinant of how easily it can be carried around. Although many sellers will claim that their PA system is portable, it is not until you see the dimensions that you can be sure whether it actually is portable or not.

Sometimes, very large systems can have a handle which makes it qualify for the “portable” tag, but it would be very difficult to actually carry it around because of its size.

  • Weight

The weight of a PA system is another important feature to determine whether the system will be portable or not. Sometimes, even very compact-looking PA systems might be very heavy and so it can be very difficult to carry them around.

PA systems that have small dimensions might have just a handle to allow users to carry it, but if the system weighs too much then it might be really difficult to make it effectively portable using just a handle.

  • Bluetooth Connectivity

Being able to connect your PA system with other devices is very important if you want to play something on your phone on the loudspeaker. Hence, it is very important to make it easy for people to connect their devices to the PA system.

The easiest way to do that is to connect via Bluetooth. With just USB connectivity, it can become very cumbersome to manage the device with a wire dangling from your phone to the PA system.

  • Remote Control

The ability to control your PA system using a remote control can go a long way if you want to address the public seamlessly. Using a remote control, you  can manage the volume of what you are playing on your system, or simply switch between different tracks.

It can create a huge difference for you as manually operating the controls from a control panel can be very difficult while maintain an engaged audience through your public addressing sessions.

  • Display

It is certainly a useful feature to have a display screen that shows what is being played and what devices are connected to the PA system. This can help you manage your performances better and you will not have to spend time and effort at figuring out whether the volume is just right or what is the next track coming up if you can see it in the screen of the system

  • Battery Longevity

Long-lasting batteries are vital to ensure that you have a smooth experience at delivering your message to the masses using the portable PA system. It is definitely important to make sure that the system has a battery life of at least 4-5 hours to ensure a seamless experience.

  • Wheels

Rolling wheels can go a long way at making the PA system easily portable. The minimum weight of a PA system can be quite overwhelming for some users and it can be very useful to have wheels at the bottom of these systems to help move them around.

Final Thoughts

While addressing the public, it is certainly important that you have the best system at your disposal to deliver your message. The portable PA systems with wireless microphones that we have reviewed through this article are excellent. However, our favorite is the LyxPro 12 Inch Active PA because of its small and lightweight build and the additional items that come with it.

Why do echoes occur in your audition in the first place? – How to Reduce Echo in Your Audition

The reason we stated ‘beginner music recorder’ is because most professional music records know they will end up with echoes, but know how to reduce echo from their auditions. This is not a complicated method, but rather an easy one. In this article, we have discussed all the ways you can reduce echo in your audition.

Most microphones that are used for recording are powerful enough to capture sound reflections. Sound waves that are reflected from your floor, ceilings, walls and every time someone walks past it are captured by it.

Thus, you end up with unwanted echoes in your audition. You cannot completely remove these effects, but certain tools exist that helps to reduce the amount of echoing and help to enhance your audio’s quality.

Sometimes microphones can also record echoes that come out of your headphones or speakers. This happens when your speakers are close to your mic. To prevent this you need to disable the ‘listen to device’ option. Some webcams have a built-in option for microphones.

A common mistake can occur when people set the wrong microphone to record. This problem can be solved from your ‘Audio mixer’ option and select the right one.

How to reduce echo in your audition?

  • First of all, choose your audition file which contains echoes and select it. After opening the file, choose a quiet portion of your waveform and select it. You have to right-click on that quiet section and select the option ‘Capture noise print’. This selection will help adobe audition to identify which is the echo and which is the main audio in the recording.
  • Next, to remove the echo that you previously selected you have to go to ‘effects’ option then select the ‘noise restoration’ option. Click on your file and listen to check if your echo has been removed from your audition. If you want to make the Gating effect sharper then go to the ‘Advanced’ tab and then lower the slide of ‘Spectral decay rate’. If you think the changes made are satisfactory then click on ‘Apply’ and save them.
  • After that, go to ‘Effects’ and then select ‘Amplitude and Compression’ then click on ‘Dynamic Processing’. You will see a compression file on your screen, here you can edit and re-shape your overall wavelength. You will find a diagonal line mark along the line of the processing display. Changing the pattern of this line will curve the default audio path and affect the echoes in your audition. You can change this line and its position however you like and carry out A/B testing with the original audio.
  • If you are happy with how your audio sound and have managed to reduce echoes in your audition using the ‘Dynamics processing’ option then select your complete waveform. Then click on the ‘OK’ option. This will, however, cause to lower your audio’s volume or amplitude. You can increase your volume level from your ‘Amplitude & Compression’ option by clicking on ‘Normalize’.
  • Some muddy and annoying frequencies caused by the echoes may still exist in your audition. To solve this problem, go to the ‘Effects’ option again ‘Pick filter & EQ’ and go to ‘Parametric Equalizer’. You will be presented with 7 different frequency bands to choose from along with a high-pass and a low-pass band. They exist thereby system defaults. You can choose any or a few of the bands to fix your midrange and all the unwanted frequencies from your audition.

Some convenient techniques to help reduce echo in an audition – How to Reduce Echo in Your Audition

Try to capture the noise from the room tone that is ambient. Next, use the noise reduction option to cancel that room tone. Then use parametric equalizers to reduce the frequencies that you find disturbing or does not blend well. You can swipe around with any peak until you manage to find any frequency that sounds strange to you then reduce it to 15dB. Try lowering few of the frequencies.

After that, use another parametric equalizer to cause enrichment of the voice. You can increase the lows and high slightly and lower the frequencies from the middle. This will help to make your audio sound crispier but less muffled.

You can also add a single-band compressor to help even out the amplitude of the voice. This will improve the quality of your audio and reduce echoes. The overall quality of your sound will sound better and much more pleasant with all the echoes hones.

Adaptive Noise reduction

Adobe audition has an amazing adaptive noise reduction option that helps to remove and reduce all unwanted echoes from your audio. This can reduce the most ambient background noise and even wind noise. You can use this through the ‘Multitrack editor’.
